Margraf/Lewin/Kästner – Wendeletters

On September 29, 1989, in the autumn of the fall of the Berlin Wall, East German Miriam Margraf travels to Ethiopia as a member of a youth brigade of agricultural machinery fitters to work as a harvest helper. Her mother Waldtraut Lewin, a writer and member of the East German Academy of Arts, experiences the next few weeks of upheaval in her home country at first hand and corresponds with her daughter in Ethiopia. The second part of the book contains excerpts from Miriam’s diary from the period from September 29 to December 20, 1989, in Ethiopia.
